Heb A true believer will show works of repentance Mark ; John —21; Acts When someone truly believes, that person will repent, and when a believer truly repents, that believer will obey the Gospel putting to death the old self, being buried with Christ in baptism, to be raised by grace into the newness of life Rom —7; Eph —7; Col —13; cf.
By considering the words of Jesus and His Apostles, is repentance necessary for salvation? The answer is clear. May God have mercy on us and help us to preach Salvation the way the New Testament teaches. Like Liked by 1 person. You are commenting using your WordPress. Our individualistic society feeds off the thought that 'I' should focus on myself — and that 'truth' is simply what I believe and how dare anyone challenge that.
But that smacks of a hardness of heart — whereas we are called to be softened and malleable in God's hands. God has been talking to me a lot recently about how vital our need to say sorry is. I've come to realise that repentance actually holds the key to unlocking so much freedom within us as Christians. We need to say sorry both to God and to others. We need to have the grace to allow others to say sorry to us and forgive when necessary.
It is true that, as Elton John says, 'sorry seems to be the hardest word'. However, here are five compelling reasons to put in the effort. God wants us to be humble enough to acknowledge when we are in the wrong, rather than trying to cover it up.
When we come to Him with honesty it shows integrity; we aren't trying to pretend we are better than we are. Saying sorry and asking for forgiveness demonstrates our continued need of a Saviour. We can't do everything in our own strength — repenting when we trip up shows that we recognise this and are leaning on God. I love spending time in the psalms — David is one of my biblical heroes. So much strength, wisdom, depth of feeling and a worshipful heart, and yet he wasn't perfect.
He stooped to an all-time low in his episode of covering up his sin with Bathsheba, but, when the prophet Nathan confronted David his immediate response was 'I have sinned against God', and he wrote Psalm 51 to God soon after. Some less serious sins involve no one but ourselves and the Lord.
These may be confessed privately to the Lord. Part of repentance is to make restitution. This means that as much as possible we must make right any wrong that we have done. For example, a thief should give back what he has stolen.
A liar should make the truth known. A gossip who has slandered the character of a person should work to restore the good name of the person he has harmed. As we do these things, God will not mention our sins to us when we are judged see Ezekiel — A vital part of repentance is to forgive those who have sinned against us.
The Lord will not forgive us unless our hearts are fully cleansed of all hate, bitterness, and bad feelings against other people see 3 Nephi — We are not fully repentant if we do not pay tithes or keep the Sabbath day holy or obey the Word of Wisdom.
We are not repentant if we do not sustain the authorities of the Church and do not love the Lord and our fellowmen. If we do not pray and are unkind to others, we are surely not repentant. When we repent, our life changes. Having gained that ground he then must live the commandments of the Lord to retain his vantage point.
