Instead, the ground was covered in sagebrush, a mustard-yellow scrub, and dotted with those same cacti and their contorted limbs. At the rise of the nearest dune, I could spot the sand replacing the sun-blasted dirt.
To be more precise, the Sea of Cortez. He promised he knew the language, the layout of the town, and where to go for the best tequila. Musician Roger Clyne has made a career out of his love for Mexico. When the band split up and Clyne formed The Peacemakers, that theme never went away.
The group began bringing other musical acts with them over the years, changing venues, until a real grassroots festival was formed. As I attended, it was the 15th anniversary of the first Circus Mexicus. Due to its occasionally bi-annual nature, it was also The Circus Mexicus 23rd festival.
The first thing I noticed was the billboards, advertisement after advertisement along the two-lane highway leading up to Rocky Point. They were all in English. Most were for the same venue, a touristy bar in the touristy part of town.
I made a note to never go there. The road widened as we entered the town, but no lane markers were added. Even with our Mexican insurance, we drove our rental car carefully around the locals. Every road we took seemed to be lined with orange cones, the ground beneath us alternating between gravel and cement.
Many construction sites were unmanned. In several half-built buildings, the steel girders had been exposed long enough to rust. We found our rental house, a quaint two-story near the beach in a suburban stretch called Las Conchas, and then went out to explore the city. These too were under construction, ever-expanding. A new port was being built nearby as well, for the eventual cruise ships.
Their section of the Sea of Cortez is famously perfect waters for shrimp, which they have memorialized with several statues of man-sized crustaceans in their public squares. It made for some interesting visuals. Facing the bar was a small stage, where the assembling festival-goers were treated to acoustic songs from acts like Shurman, who were scheduled to plug in and play loud later in the weekend.
There was a voluntary cover charge, with proceeds going to a local charity. Continuing on through Monday June There will be many acts playing throughout Puerto Penasco over these 5 days. Bands from all over the United States and Mexico will join together to celebrate the return of live music and Circus Mexicus. Of course you can always expect the famous fireworks to rain over the Tequila Main stage Friday and Saturday night!
All shows are either outdoors or in ventilated, open air venues. Temperature checks, hand sanitizer and masks will be required at entry as well as masks required in cars carrying 2 or more people. As of this posting the concert has tickets purchased from 38 U.
In other words a healthy crowd is expected this year attendance has grown almost every year of their 14 year history, especially the last four years and everyone is encouraged to carpool to the concert when possible to minimize parking congestion.
Taxis are available from all the hotels and resorts for drop off and pick up near the entrance to the new concert location in the Reef RV Park grounds specially designed to hold the large increase in attendance. Roger usually shows up and, the trooper he is, signs autographs and chats casually with as many folks as he can.
The music is inside Wrecked at the Reef and the party happens inside, outside, along the expansive patio and among the palapas and bars leading to Sandy Beach. Players and spectators alike are asked to please bring any new or used sporting goods you may have to the tournament.
There will be YSF volunteers to gratefully accept your donations.
